Broke Your Phone? Why eSIM Makes Switching to a Spare Harder
Broke Your Phone? Why eSIM Makes Switching to a Spare Harder (and How to Prepare)
📶 eSIM & Carriers
⏱ 4 min read
A few years ago, if your phone broke, getting back online was easy: pop the SIM card out, slide it into an old phone, and you were back in business in 30 seconds.
Today, more and more phones use an eSIM instead. In Canada, every new iPhone since the iPhone 17 lineup (fall 2025) has no SIM tray at all: they activate only with eSIM. eSIM is great in a lot of ways, but it changes what happens when your phone breaks. Here’s what you need to know before it happens to you.
What is an eSIM?
An eSIM is a digital SIM built right into your phone. Instead of a little plastic card, your carrier sends your phone line to the device electronically. There’s nothing to pop out, and nothing to move by hand.
🇨🇦 eSIM-only iPhones sold in Canada (no SIM tray):
📱 iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Pro & iPhone 17 Pro Max
📱 iPhone Air
📱 iPhone 18 Pro models
iPhone 11 to iPhone 16 models sold in Canada still have a SIM tray and support eSIM, so check which one your carrier set you up with.
eSIM: the good and the catch
✅ THE GOOD
🔒 Harder for a thief to steal your number
💧 No SIM card to lose, bend or corrode
☎ Two lines on one phone
✈ Easy to add a travel plan
⚠ THE CATCH
If your phone is dead, has a black screen or won’t respond to touch, the eSIM is stuck inside it. You can’t move it to another phone yourself. Your carrier has to reissue it.
What happens when a phone with an eSIM breaks
If the phone still turns on and the screen works, moving your eSIM is usually quick. On iPhone, eSIM Quick Transfer (if your carrier supports it) moves it to another iPhone right in the settings, without calling anyone. Many Android phones can do something similar. But Quick Transfer needs the old phone to be working.
If the phone can’t be used, here’s what it usually looks like:
- 1 Contact your carrier – by phone, chat, their app or in store.
- 2 Verify your identity – account PIN, security questions or ID. The catch: verification codes are often sent by text… to the phone that’s broken.
- 3 Get a new eSIM – they send a new QR code or activation for the spare phone.
- 4 Do it all again – once your phone is repaired, the eSIM has to be moved back.
🛠 What this means when your phone is in for repair
Most of our repairs, like screens, batteries and charging ports, are done the same day, so most customers just wait and never have to touch their eSIM.
Bigger jobs are different. Board-level repairs and motherboard damage can take 1–2 days, and with an eSIM, we can’t just pop your SIM into a spare phone like we used to.
Moving an eSIM means a call with your carrier and an identity check that only you can complete, so we’re not able to set up your line on another phone for you. If you’ll need a phone during a longer repair, please plan to contact your carrier yourself to move your eSIM to a spare.
How to prepare now (before anything breaks)
- ✓ Know your carrier account login – and your account PIN or security answers.
- ✓ Install your carrier’s app – many let you manage your eSIM from there.
- ✓ Add a backup way to verify – like an email address or a second phone number on your account.
- ✓ Keep an old phone that supports eSIM – as your backup.
- ✓ Phone still works but needs a big repair? Transfer your eSIM to your spare before you drop it off, while you still can.
- ✓ Back up your phone – iCloud or Google, so your contacts and photos are safe no matter what.
The bottom line
eSIM makes your phone line more secure, but that same security means only you and your carrier can move it. A few minutes of prep today can save you hours on hold when your phone breaks. And for most repairs, there’s nothing to move at all: just book a time, wait, and leave with your phone fixed.
